Born in Ethiopia, Samson's childhood dream was to become a physician. Political upheaval during the fall of Ethiopia's monarchy violently disrupted his life and education.
Samson was arrested and thrown into an overcrowded prison where the conditions were brutal. In a moment of extraordinary courage, he volunteered to be identified as a deceased prisoner to secure his release. Freedom was only the beginning of his ordeal.
Eventually crossing into Djibouti, Samson reunited with relatives and made his way to the United States. SUNY Downstate Medical Center offered him free tuition. One serendipitous moment came after treating a young woman in the hospital—he accidentally dialed her phone number later, sparking a conversation that blossomed into love and marriage.
Today, Samson is a respected neurologist with a pharmacist son and a daughter who is a teacher.
