Dr. Parag H. Mehta

Dr. Parag H. Mehta is Chief of the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk and Professor of Clinical Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. His path began at NHL Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, India, and led — through residency at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn — to nearly four decades of caring for patients, teaching, and leading.

For twenty-five years at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital he served in roles spanning the full breadth of hospital medicine: Co-Chief of General Internal Medicine, Chief Medical Information Officer, Senior Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine, and Interim Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer. He led the hospital’s electronic health record transformation — placing it among the top hospitals in the country — and founded its informatics fellowship.

Teaching runs through everything. In 1999 he founded the Internal Medicine Board Review Course and directed it for more than seventeen years. He has been honored repeatedly by his residents and department — Best Attending, Excellence in Teaching, Best Research Mentor — and mentors students, residents, international medical graduates, and early-career physicians to this day.

In organized medicine, he served as President of the Medical Society of the State of New York (2022–2023), Governor of the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians for Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island (2018–2022), and President of the Kings County Medical Society — advocating in Albany and Washington for patients, physicians, and international medical graduates. His honors include the NYACP Laureate Award, a citation from the Governor of New York, and recognition among Crain’s Notable Leaders in Healthcare and Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors.

He writes and speaks widely on leadership, physician well-being, mentorship, and the human side of medicine — from grand rounds on “Mastering Medicine and Life: Beyond the Stethoscope” to keynotes on happiness, gratitude, and living with purpose. An avid listener of audiobooks, a recreational tennis player, and a lifelong learner, he believes the best medicine is taught one story — and one learner — at a time.
