The Spark on the Floor: Joanna's Everyday Radiance

Joy in Motion

From the book Healing Stories of Hope

Stay grateful for the little things.

Joanna Cortez

If joy were a person, it would be Joanna Cortez. She is the kind of person whose smile brightens an entire hospital floor—a presence that feels like sunshine cutting through clouds. Her energy is infectious, and she makes everyone around her feel welcome, important, and seen.

Born in Saint John's, Smithtown, Joanna carries both Italian and Irish roots. Her father was a mechanic; her mother worked in dietary services. Those humble beginnings helped shape the core of who she is: grounded, grateful, and giving.

Her favorite part of the job? Being helpful. She thrives when she is making life easier for others—coworkers, patients, anyone who crosses her path. Though she occasionally struggles with anxiety, Joanna keeps moving forward, choosing compassion and resilience every day.

Joanna teaches us that positivity is power. Through kindness, presence, and humility, she uplifts everyone around her. You do not need a grand title or loud voice to be a leader of the heart.

Takeaway: Always be nice. Stay grateful for the little things.
